Central Flyway Duck Season 2026-27: Plains Dates

The regular duck season opens late in the Central Flyway, and the 2026-27 calendar is now final across the plains. The first real opportunities arrive in late September and early October, when Youth, Veteran and Active Military days break the ice weeks ahead of the general openers. Here is how Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado line up this fall.

How the Central Flyway Season Is Built

The Central Flyway runs down the middle of the country — Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas. Each state sets its duck seasons inside federal frameworks, which is why you see the same pattern everywhere: a short early segment, a split, and a long late segment that carries into January.

The split matters. Early segments target locally produced birds, wood ducks and teal, plus the first bluebills. The late segment catches the mallard flight pushed down by northern fronts. If you only hunt one of the two, you are hunting half the season.

Texas Duck Season Dates for 2026-27

Texas Parks & Wildlife splits the state into three duck zones plus the High Plains Mallard Management Unit. The High Plains is the longest season in the state and often the most weather dependent.

Youth and Veteran days come first: Oct. 17-18 in the High Plains, Nov. 7-8 in North and Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in South. Texas also runs a September teal season (Sept. 19-27) and early Canada goose in the East Zone (Sept. 12-27).

Oklahoma Duck Season Dates

Oklahoma's Panhandle sits in the High Plains Mallard Management Unit with the longest run in the state — Oct. 10, 2026 through Jan. 13, 2027. Zones 1 and 2 are split: Nov. 14-Dec. 6 and Dec. 12-Jan. 31.

Special waterfowl days in Oklahoma favor the Panhandle first. Youth, Veteran and Active Military hunters get Oct. 3, 2026 and Jan. 30, 2027 in Cimarron, Texas and Beaver counties, then Nov. 7, 2026 and Feb. 6, 2027 across the rest of the state.

Nebraska's New Three-Zone Setup

Nebraska moved from four duck zones to three for 2026-27 after the Commission redrew boundaries. The former Zone 4 became Zone 1, and the old Zone 1 was folded into Zone 2.

Nebraska youth, veteran and active-duty days run Sept. 26-27 in Zone 2 and Oct. 17-18 in Zones 1 and 3. The state also approved a nine-day early teal season, Sept. 5-13.

Kansas and Colorado Notes

Kansas uses four duck units — High Plains and Low Plains Early, Late and Southeast — and its segments open by zone from late October into early November. The state's special Youth, Veteran and Active Military days are set at Oct. 3-4 (High Plains), Sept. 26-27 (Low Plains Early), Oct. 17-18 (Late) and Oct. 24-25 (Southeast). Kansas also changes nonresident shooting hours effective Sept. 25, 2026: nonresidents must stop at 11:59 a.m. on all waterfowl except teal and light goose conservation order seasons. Plan the drive home around that.

Colorado requires a small-game license for waterfowl, plus two stamps for hunters 16 and older: the $33 Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp and the $12.76 Colorado State Waterfowl Stamp. The state stamp prints on your license and is validated by signing it in ink — an unsigned stamp is not a valid stamp.

Bag Limits and Stamps

Most Central Flyway states run a six-duck daily bag with species restrictions. Oklahoma's limit is six combined ducks, but no more than five mallards (two hens), three wood ducks, three pintails, two redheads, two canvasbacks and one scaup, with 15 coots allowed.

Nebraska uses a tiered limit: Tier 1 allows six ducks with restrictions, while Tier 2 allows three ducks of any species and either sex. Possession limits are three times the daily bag. Nationally, every waterfowl hunter 16 and older needs a signed federal duck stamp, plus HIP registration in the state where they hunt.

How to Hunt the Early Plains Window

Early segments are local-bird hunts. Scouting beats decoys in October — find the loafing water the birds are using now, not the field that was hot last season. Small water and sheetwater after a rain can hold more ducks than the big marsh everyone drives past.

Weather still drives the late flight. A hard front through the Dakotas and Nebraska in early November pushes birds south into Kansas and Oklahoma within days, and the same system usually reaches Texas about a week later. Hunt those transition days and you catch birds that have not been shot at for a week.
