Early Teal Season 2026: Iowa, Missouri & Arkansas Dates

September teal season is the first real duck hunting of the year, and across the Mississippi Flyway three states put it on the calendar in the next three weeks. Iowa's special teal-only season opened Sept. 5, Missouri follows Sept. 12-20, and Arkansas closes out the stretch Sept. 19-27. All three run nine days, all target the earliest migrants of the fall, and none of them require the full arsenal of a November duck setup.

Blue-winged teal are the first ducks to head south, and the September seasons were built around that movement. It's a low-pressure, high-action window: a handful of decoys, a well-hidden spot on a shallow wetland, and the kind of fast, straightaway shooting that tunes you up for the regular duck season.

2026 Early Teal Dates at a Glance

Shooting hours for the teal-only seasons run sunrise to sunset in all three states, which is a change from the short morning windows some hunters expect from September hunting. That full-day schedule makes the two weekends in each season especially productive for families and new waterfowlers.

Iowa: Already Open

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources lists the statewide special September teal season as Sept. 5-13, and it's the state's first duck season of 2026. Hunters need a small-game license, the habitat fee and Iowa's migratory game bird fee; the DNR notes a federal duck stamp is required when federal rules call for it, so check the regulations before you head out.

Iowa's teal hunting leans on the prairie pothole country in the northwest part of the state, plus the river sloughs and shallow marsh units scattered along the Mississippi. With the season already underway, scouting is the difference-maker — teal move on weather fronts, so the birds you mark on Saturday may be gone by Tuesday.

Missouri: The Heart of the Flyway

Missouri's teal season runs Sept. 12-20, 2026, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation, with a six-teal daily bag and 18-bird possession limit. Blue-winged, green-winged and cinnamon teal are legal; the MDC specifically warns that northern shovelers, pintails and wood ducks wear similar plumage and are illegal to shoot during this season.

Missouri's shallow marsh units — the managed moist-soil impoundments on conservation areas across the northern half of the state — are the classic early-season teal spots. Small water is the pattern: teal prefer inches-deep mud flats and pond edges over open water, so the low-water units draw birds that ignore the big lakes.

Arkansas: Late-September Window

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission lists the 2026 early teal season as Sept. 19-27, with a six-bird daily limit (blue-winged, green-winged and cinnamon teal combined) and 18-bird possession limit. Arkansas hunters need a valid hunting license plus the state's waterfowl requirements spelled out in the AGFC waterfowl guidebook.

Arkansas teal action centers on greentree reservoirs and moist-soil units in the Delta, plus the shallow sloughs along the White and Arkansas rivers. Early teal in Arkansas often means hunting water that will be packed with mallard hunters in December — a chance to learn the timber and the units without the crowds.

Regs That Apply Everywhere

All three states operate under the federal framework, so the non-negotiables are the same. Nontoxic shot is required — steel, bismuth or the other USFWS-approved loads — and your shotgun must be plugged to a three-shell maximum. You'll also need to complete the free HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification for migratory birds in whatever state you hunt.

One more identification note worth repeating: during a teal-only season, only teal are legal. If a bird is bigger than a teal, hangs low in the water or flashes green — shoveler, pintail, wood duck, hen mallard — it's off the table. Teal flare straight up off the water in tight flocks and turn on a dime; wood ducks are the ones that look like they're flying through trees.

Gearing Up for the Teal Window

You don't need a spread of 60 decoys for teal. Six to twelve teal decoys — or even a half-dozen mallard blocks mixed in — set close to the bank in a natural pocket is plenty. Teal pour into small water and land hard, so decoy placement matters less than concealment: brush in completely, sit still, and let them commit.

Calling is optional. A few soft teal peeps from a whistle or the teal setting on a duck call can pull birds in, but most September teal are killed by hunters who hide well and shoot straight. Use steel shot in No. 2 or No. 4, choke modified or improved cylinder, and swing through the bird — teal are small, fast targets that make everyone look rusty for the first box of shells.
