Great Lakes Salmon Run 2026: Timing, Rivers & Regs

Right now, in the first week of September 2026, mature Chinook salmon are staging at the mouths of Great Lakes tributaries from Michigan to New York, and the first fish are already pushing upstream on rain-cooled water. For river anglers, this is the opening act of the fall salmon run - weeks of chrome-bright kings, aggressive coho, and the steelhead that trail behind them. Here's when to be on the water, which rivers deliver, and the 2026 rules to know before you wade in.

Why September Means Salmon

Great Lakes Chinook and coho are Pacific salmon stocked into the lakes as smolts; after three to five years at sea, they return to the streams where they were released to spawn. Michigan's DNR notes that Chinook begin their upstream migration in late summer and are usually present in catchable numbers by mid-August - which makes the next six to eight weeks the heart of the river season.

Fish stack at river mouths first, then surge upstream once cool rains drop water temperatures. That's why a good September rain event can turn a slow river into a full-blown run overnight. Coho typically follow the kings in September and October, and steelhead add a second wave later in the fall.

Michigan: Lake Michigan's Classic Tributaries

The Manistee, Pere Marquette and St. Joseph rivers are the standouts, with the Muskegon, Grand and Betsie rivers close behind - all within a few hours of each other along the western Lower Peninsula.

DNR hatchery crews begin egg-take operations at the Platte River State Fish Hatchery in mid-September, a reliable signal that kings are in the system. Michigan Rules to Know for 2026-27

Anglers 17 and older need a valid Michigan fishing license. On the Great Lakes and connecting waters, trout and salmon are open all year with a 10-inch minimum size and a daily possession limit of five fish in any combination - no more than three of one species, except up to five Chinook, coho or pink salmon. Lake trout and splake have their own management-unit limits, and regulations on individual rivers can change upstream of the first dam.

New York: The Salmon River and Lake Ontario Tribs

On the New York side, the DEC says tributary fishing for Chinook and coho typically begins in early September and runs into early November, with the peak often falling in the first two weeks of October. The DEC stocks roughly 900,000 Chinook into Lake Ontario every year, and the Salmon River at Pulaski and Altmar in Oswego County is the marquee destination - a world-class run that draws anglers from across the Northeast.

The Black River at Watertown, the Oswego River, Oak Orchard Creek and Eighteenmile Creek also host solid runs. The DEC's Salmon River Fish Hatchery at Altmar collects eggs from returning fish each fall, and its fish ladder is worth a look when the run peaks.

New York Rules to Know

Anglers 16 and older need a New York fishing license. Most Lake Ontario tributaries fall under the DEC's Great Lakes and Tributaries special regulations from September 1 through March 31, which means single-hook gear (hook gap no more than half an inch, free-swinging hooks), no fishing from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise, and a modest daily creel of trout and salmon - check the DEC guide for the exact limit on the water you plan to fish.

On the Salmon River below the Route 52 bridge in Altmar, single-hook rules apply from August 15 through April 14. The river also has two famous fly-fishing catch-and-release sections: the lower fly section (open September 15 through May 15) and the upper fly section (open April 1 through November 30).

Gear, Bait and Landing Fish

Michigan river regulars fish spoons, spinners and plugs, plus roe bags or chunks of cut skein drifted on the bottom or under a bobber. A medium-heavy spinning rod or an 8-weight fly rod, 12- to 20-pound main line, and a good drag system are the basics - fresh-run kings are powerful fish that will strip line in a heartbeat.

When you hook up, keep pressure steady and be ready to chase fish downstream. By late October many salmon darken and finish spawning; those fish are best released to complete their life cycle, so save the table fish for bright, fresh-run chrome that hasn't started turning.
