Midwest Archery Deer 2026-27: WI, MI & MO Dates

September archery whitetail seasons are the quietest, most underrated stretch of the Midwest deer calendar. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Missouri all put bowhunters in the woods before the leaves turn — and before the November gun rush pushes mature bucks into lock-down mode. Velvet still hangs on many antlers, bachelor groups are just starting to break apart, and big deer are still running predictable routes between agriculture fields and bedding cover. Here is the 2026-27 breakdown of dates, licenses, and how to pattern velvet bucks on Midwest ag ground.

2026-27 Archery Season Dates at a Glance

All three states sell deer licenses over the counter — no draw required for the archery season itself. Book a few days off around the opener and you are on the ground while most hunters are still cleaning gear.

Wisconsin: Velvet on the Edge of the Corn

Wisconsin's archery and crossbow season opens Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, and runs through Jan. 3, 2027, with metro sub-units and counties offering extended archery seasons through Jan. 31. The 9-day gun season runs Nov. 21-29, which means bowhunters own the woods for more than two months before the first gunshots. A resident deer license runs $24, and archery/crossbow is a separate $24 license — nonresidents pay $165-$200 depending on the license type.

The play here is agriculture. Big Wisconsin bucks spend September slipping between standing corn, soybean fields, and the nearest timber. In the Driftless Area and the farmland zones, glass the field edges at first and last light instead of sitting blind in the timber. Morning hunts over picked-edge feed, evening hunts downwind of staging cover, and you'll see deer that vanish once the guns roar in November.

Michigan: Patience Pays After an Oct. 1 Opener

Michigan's archery season opens Oct. 1, 2026, runs through Nov. 14, then resumes Dec. 1 through Jan. 1, 2027 — per the DNR calendar. It's the latest of the three Midwest openers, but it still lands a month and a half before the Nov. 15 regular firearm season. Youth, disabled, and mentored hunters can get out earlier with the Liberty Hunt on Sept. 12-13, and the early antlerless firearm hunt runs Sept. 19-20 in select areas.

A resident deer combo license (two tags valid for archery, firearm, and muzzleloader seasons) runs about $40 on top of the roughly $11 base license; the all-species combo with fishing is $76. In the southern Lower Peninsula's farm country, October bucks are still moving on predictable ag patterns — soybeans, standing corn, and the draws between them. Hunt the wind, not the sign: one bad thermal check can blow out a field you'd planned to hunt all month.

Missouri: The Sept. 15 Jump Start

Missouri throws the earliest full Midwest bow opener outside Wisconsin — Sept. 15, 2026 — running to Nov. 13, then reopening Nov. 25 through Jan. 15, 2027. The November firearms portion runs Nov. 14-24, and the alternative methods season follows Dec. 26-Jan. 5. Residents need a deer hunting permit ($19) plus a small game hunting permit ($20.50), so figure roughly $40 to get legal. Antlerless permits are available over the counter in many counties and can be stacked for extra freezer tags.

September in Missouri is all about food. Soybeans and alfalfa pull deer for miles, but don't overlook early acorn drops on ridge lines. Velvet bucks are still moving in bachelor groups of two to five, and they're easier to pattern now than at any other point in the season. Set cameras on field corners and water sources, then hunt the approach routes — not the field itself — to keep pressure off the pattern.

Patterning Velvet Bucks on Ag Ground

The same playbook works across all three states. In September, deer are still on summer-to-fall feeding routines: beds in thick cover, feed in agriculture or high-protein browse, water twice a day. Velvet bucks are less pressured than they'll ever be again, but they're also still nocturnal-leaning — hunt the edges, not the centers.

• Glass first. From 300-plus yards, watch field edges and staging areas with binoculars before deciding where to set up.
• Hunt the wind. Thermal shifts in warm September weather will ruin setups faster than any buck. Use thermals to your advantage in the evening.
• Don't overhunt. One or two sits per week on a given field beats a daily grind that educates every deer in the area.
• Go light on pressure. Skip the September rattling and grunting in most cases; velvet bucks are still tolerant of young bucks and won't respond to challenge calls like they will in late October.
• Check cameras remotely. A cellular camera lets you pattern movement without walking the field edge every morning.
