September Canada Goose 2026: WI & Iowa Dates

September is duck-less in much of the Midwest, but it is not goose-less. Wisconsin and Iowa both run September Canada goose seasons built around the region's abundant resident "giant" Canada geese, and for two weeks Wisconsin hunters get a daily limit that is higher than anything the regular season offers. Here is who can hunt Canada geese this September, what the 2026 dates and limits are, and how to put early-season honkers on the ground.

Wisconsin: Sept. 1-15, Five Canada Geese Per Day

Wisconsin's early goose season opened Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 15, 2026, statewide and uniformly regulated, according to the Wisconsin DNR. The early season carries an increased daily bag limit of five Canada geese. The regular goose season then takes over Sept. 16 in the Northern and Southern goose zones, with the Mississippi River goose zone opening Oct. 3.

The early window targets Wisconsin's resident breeding geese — the same local flocks that loaf on park ponds and strip soybean stubble all summer. Because these birds are homegrown rather than migrants, pressure is light and hunting is almost entirely a field game.

Wisconsin goose hunters must carry proof of a small game license, the early Canada goose permit, Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration, a state waterfowl stamp, and a federal duck stamp — electronic copies on a phone or the Go Wild Conservation Card are acceptable.

Iowa: Metro-Zone Seasons Open Sept. 12

Iowa does not run a statewide September goose season, but it does offer a special metropolitan Canada goose season around its three largest cities. The season opens the second Saturday of September — Sept. 12, 2026 — and runs nine consecutive days through Sept. 20 in the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids-Iowa City, and Waterloo-Cedar Falls zones, with a daily bag limit of five Canada geese.

Those metro zones exist to control resident goose numbers where conflicts with people and property are highest, so access is a mix of public river corridors, city-edge ponds, and private fields. Zone boundary maps and special regulations are published in the Iowa DNR migratory game bird rules; an Iowa hunting license, HIP registration, and federal duck stamp apply.

No September Goose Season? Check These States

September goose hunting is the exception, not the rule, across the rest of the Midwest. Before you plan around a season that does not exist, here is the 2026 reality:

• Minnesota: No September Canada goose season. Minnesota's new five-day early teal season runs Sept. 5-9, and resident honkers are managed under the regular waterfowl seasons that open later in the month.
• Missouri: The early Canada goose and brant season runs Oct. 3-10, 2026, with a three-bird daily aggregate limit — September there belongs to teal (Sept. 12-20) and doves.

Field Tactics for September Honkers

September geese are resident birds with local flight patterns, which makes them huntable but different from October migrants. They are not spooky about decoys the way late-season birds are, but they have spent all summer dodging lawn chairs, golf carts, and farm traffic — movement and skyline silhouettes will flare them faster than any call mistake.

• Hunt the feed, not the roost. Glass field edges at first and last light to find where family groups are hitting cut corn, wheat stubble, or soybeans, then set up on the exact field they used the evening before.
• Keep the spread honest. A dozen to two dozen full-body or shell decoys in small family clusters beats a 100-bird migration spread. September birds will land in a spread that looks like a half-dozen families feeding.
• Hide flat and still. Layout blinds or shallow pits in stubble are the standard. If you are in a layout, keep your head down until the birds commit — residents have been watching people all summer.
• Call less, cluck more. Skip the hail calls. Contentment clucks and feeding murmurs match the mood of local birds that have heard every call on the pond all summer.
• Hunt the edges of the day. Warm September weather pushes geese to water midday. The last two hours of light are reliably the best, with the first hour of morning a close second.

Non-toxic shot is required for geese, and skybusting a working flock is the fastest way to educate every bird in the township. Let them cup and commit, then take high-percentage shots as they backpedal into the spread.

Plan Ahead for the Rest of the Season

September goose seasons are a bonus — a chance to shoot limit straps of big resident Canadas before the leaves turn.
