Tautog Season 2026: Northeast Fall Dates & Limits

Tautog move shallow and feed hard in the fall, and the 2026 season is built around that shift. Every Northeast state opens a bigger fall window, several bump the bag limit on Oct. 15, and tautog stay catchable on hard structure well into December. Here is what is legal where, and how to put a limit of blackfish on the deck.

Tautog - blackfish, tog, chinner - are structure fish. They live on rockpiles, jetties, bridge pilings, mussel beds and wrecks, and they do not move far. What changes in fall is their appetite and their willingness to sit in shallow water, which puts them within reach of small boats and shore anglers alike. The seasonal limits below are the ones to have in your phone before you leave the dock.

2026 Fall Tautog Seasons by State

Massachusetts and Rhode Island share the same 16-inch minimum and the same calendar: three fish through Oct. 14, then five fish from Oct. 15 through Dec. 31. In both states only one retained fish per angler per day may exceed 21 inches, and Rhode Island caps a private vessel at 10 fish per day. Massachusetts applies the same 10-fish vessel maximum to private anglers.

Connecticut runs its own schedule. The fall window there is Oct. 10 through Nov. 28 with a three-fish limit and a 16-inch minimum - earlier than its neighbors and shorter, so plan around it rather than assuming the Oct. 15 change applies.

New Jersey goes the other way. Tautog stay open all fall, but the bag is a single fish from Aug. 1 through Nov. 15 with a 15-inch minimum. The limit jumps to five fish on Nov. 16 and holds through Dec. 31, which is when the wreck and reef bite is at its best anyway.

New York splits its Marine and Coastal District into two tautog regions. The Long Island Sound region opens Oct. 11 and the New York Bight opens Oct. 15, both with a 16-inch minimum. DEC sets possession by region and can adjust it mid-season, so check the current table for your waters before keeping fish.

How to Fish the Fall Window

Tautog are not a run-and-gun species in the way striped bass are, but they do follow water temperature. As inshore water falls into the low 60s and then the 50s, fish stack on the same hard bottom they use all year and feed more aggressively. Rockpiles, jetty ends, bridge bases, mussel and oyster beds, and the rubble around inlets all hold fish.

Bait is simple: green crabs, Asian crabs, fiddler crabs and sandworms all work, cut into chunks or fished whole on a stout hook. Tog also eat jigs - a 1- to 2-ounce crab-tipped jig is standard for deep structure. Use 30- to 50-pound leader and a rod with enough backbone to lift a fish away from the rocks, because the first three seconds decide most battles.

Timing and Presentation

• Tide: Tautog feed best on a moving tide, particularly the first half of the incoming and the last of the outgoing. Slack water is the slow period.
• Position: Anchor upcurrent of the structure and fish straight down or with a short cast. Repeated drifts over the same rockpile rarely produce better than a pinned anchor.
• Bottom feel: Hold bottom. If you cannot feel the sinker or jig ticking rock, you are not fishing where the tog are.
• Move: If a piece of structure has produced nothing in 20 minutes, it is usually empty. Blackfish are territorial and hold in small groups.

Late fall is the best part of the season in every state on the list. Water in the low 50s keeps fish shallow on the rocks long after the bass have moved out, and the Nov. 16 limit increase in New Jersey and the Oct. 15 increase in Massachusetts and Rhode Island are timed to that bite.

Licenses, Registry and Gear Rules

Every state here requires either a saltwater fishing license or a marine registry for anglers 16 and older - Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut all have online licensing portals, and New York's Recreational Marine Fishing Registry is free but mandatory. That registration is separate from the tide tables and closure notices you should be checking.

Tautog are slow-growing and managed tightly because of it, which is why the size minimums are 15 to 16 inches and the bag limits move in steps. Two housekeeping rules matter as much as the limits: check current advisories before eating larger fish, and keep only what you will clean.
